How to overcome the challenges of working from home


Working from home is a scenario that sounds very appealing, however it comes with its own very real challenges.

How do you manage keeping your focus and staying motivated? How do you maintain work life balance when your workplace is also your home?

We look at some very real challenges you might face and how you can tackle them head on.

Isolation, loss of motivation and focus

It’s hard to get motivated or focus on tasks at hand when you are sitting in front of a screen by yourself or are surrounded by the distractions of home.  

When you’re not in the office, you also aren’t around physical people. Although for some this could be a blessing (shout out to introverts) it can also be isolating and easy to feel alone. 

What you can do: 

  • Keep in contact. Use Zoom to chat or call teammates and don’t be afraid to acknowledge you need support. You’ll find that chatting regularly with your teammates can ease the feeling of isolation and help you remember you aren’t really alone. 

  • Be mindful and attentive. Be mindful when your mind is wandering so you can take time to refocus. This could mean getting up from your desk or moving to another task. Be in the moment as much as you can.  

Work-life balance and time management

Your daily house routines and family responsibilities can impact how you work at home. If you’re not used to working from home or remotely, you may also find yourself losing time and exerting effort on the wrong things. 

What you can do:

  • Establish a regular schedule. Create a timetable that outlines everything you need to do at specific times that you can follow each day. For example, you can set regular meal breaks and let your team know. 

  • Set boundaries. Tell family or friends when you are in ‘do not disturb’ mode so you can focus on work. On the other hand, when you are on break, make sure that your workmates respect your family time. 

Lack of physical activity

Working from home usually means you’re stuck to your desk or seat for an extended time. But just sitting down for hours at a time will take its toll on your body.  

What you can do:

  • Stand up and stretch. Make a point to get up and walk around. Do it every hour to get your blood flowing. Go make yourself a cup of tea or grab a sandwich. You can even do your regular online meetings on Zoom while standing up. 

  • Make time to be active. Start your day with a short walk or exercise of your choice, or walk around the block during your daily stand up meeting. These activities may seem simple but keeping active is not only good for your body it's great for your mind. It also helps you focus and be more productive. 

No on-site technical support

What if your internet goes down or there’s something wrong with your laptop? Are you able to fix it on your own? Not having technical support right there to help you right away can be a big problem. 

What you can do:

  • Have contact details ready. Make sure to get your IT team’s phone number and/or Zoom meeting ID. This is so you can get in touch with them right away. 

  • Find tech that do home service. Having your trusted tech’s phone number could come in handy. If you don’t have one, ask workmates, friends, and/or family for referrals. You can look for people online but make sure they have good reviews.
